Superior vampire tale in the classic mould

It would be wrong to review this book properly before its release date, but it would also be negligent for me to miss an opportunity to say how much I enjoyed this accomplished, thoughful work. Taking a cue from classic horror stories and the well-crafted literature of horror writers like Anne Rice, Brien uses the vampire (and werewolf) myth to tell a powerful story of lust and a desire to be wanted and accepted. The characters are well-rounded and sympathetic, the set-pieces exciting and nail-biting and the conclusion both satisfying and full of the promise of further installments. I've probably said too much already, so I'll end now by repeating a previous statement: Denied is set to become one of THE most important vampire novels of the decade.

Denied is a great Fall read.

Denied is an interesting tale about the vampire Bachell and his plans to feed on the young, charismatic Katie. The vampires of Denied are unique, for they cannot feast freely; they need to be granted permission. Should they be denied they are cursed to recess into a new form - one all vampires fear - called the Vrykolakas, a terrible creature that stops at nothing to cause chaos wherever it goes.
This novel is graphic, and is by no means meant for the faint of heart. It holds such standards as True Blood and 30 Days Of Night, with blood, sex, gore, and evil in the most basic form.
As time goes on, the story skips ahead nearly thirty years, where the actions of Bachell and Katie has effected everyone around them. A group of vampire hunters created from the incident pursues the head vampire, Maria, in an attempt to kill her and end the threat looming over all mankind. With the help of Katie's younger brother - who has been plagued by a deadly curse ever since meeting Bachell - the hunters plot to take down Maria and every vampire that comes into their path. With an ending that will leave you in shock and awe, Denied is a great Fall read meant for those Halloween lovers who want something to keep them up at night in fright.
