Wonders of the Invisible World, by Christopher Barzak

The captivating Stonewall Honor-winning novel of love, family, and ghosts of the past

Aidan Lockwood lives in a sleepy farming town, day after unremarkable day. But when Jarrod, his former best friend, suddenly moves back home, Aidan begins to see clearly for the first time—not only to feelings that go beyond mere friendship, but to a world that is haunted by the stories of his past. Visions from this invisible world come to him unbidden: a great-grandfather on the field of battle; his own father, stumbling upon an unspeakable tragedy; and a mysterious young boy, whose whispered words may be at the heart of the curse that holds Aidan’s family in its grip.
Now, Aidan must find his way between the past and the present to protect those he loves, and to keep the invisible world at bay.

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—Aiden Lockwood is a 17-year-old farm boy drifting through his unremarkable life when Jarrod returns to their small town and long-buried memories begin to surface. Aiden is confused about why he cannot remember details from when he and Jarrod were best friends in middle school. Aiden slowly realizes that buried along with his memories were his unique abilities to see the future, the past, others' dreams, and more sinister visions, such as the moment of death. His mother is also a seer with abilities similar to Aiden's; she seems to know all but tells her son the bare minimum. Aiden's brother and father are blissfully unaware of anything beyond the material world. Through visions, the teen travels through time to see his paternal relatives and learns unsettling things about the Lockwood family history. The more Aiden finds out, the more he wants to know. When tragedy strikes, Aiden become more determined to find answers, so he and Jarrod embark on a journey for the truth to Lily Dale, NY (a famous town of Spiritualists). This story has plenty of appeal and potential and offers a twist on the typical paranormal romance—while a sincere, thoughtful LGBT relationship is important to Aiden's character development, it isn't the central focus of the book. Unfortunately, other key characters are not developed fully. The pacing of the narrative is also slightly off-kilter. VERDICT An additional purchase.—Tara Kehoe, New Jersey State Library Talking Book and Braille Center, Trenton

YA with all the things I love: an achingly sweet romance, mystery with a touch of fantastic, touching on life's beauty and pain
By kbirdlincoln
There aren't many YA writers out there who can, at the same time, craft a coming of age tale with believable characters and a deep, slow current of emotional struggle and still have a romance that leaves you with a sweet ache--and a mystery to keep you reading.

John Green does that well in my humble opinion. But as much as I'm a Green Fangirl, it's Christopher Barzak (like One for Sorrow as well as here) who does all the above using the context of a layer of magical realism or the fantastic to slice open the human heart a little wider for us lucky readers to delve into. And that's what I love-- using the fantastic to cast light on our everyday humanity.

Aidan Lockwood is invisible--not that people can't see him as he trudges along in High School and then trudges home to do his farm-chores--but that no one seems to think much about him and he doesn't seem to have much affect on the world around him.

But then one day, a new boy comes to his small, Ohio, town. This new boy sees him. Definitely sees him, and Aidan begins to recall memories he never even knew he had as well begin to see strange things in the ravine near his farm. Something's been done to Aidan, and the only way he can break himself out of this invisible life is to risk learning the truth.

The romance is just about as lovely and sweet and awkward as it could be. And Barzak's writing is deceptively simple and almost languid at times, but full of emotion. Here's a scene where the new boy, Jarrod, comes to eat at Aidan's house.

"Jarrod glanced my way, as if he was worried I'd tell everyone, but I looked down at my plate, where my mom's chicken and rice waited, and let him recover. I knew the truth about why he'd come back, but I also knew something else: that he wanted me. That he wanted me to want him back in a way I wasn't sure I could. It was almost as if I had to not look at him now, knowing all that, so he could go on being normal with my family."

While the romance is sweet, the most intense relationship is between Aidan and his mother, which I also appreciated. There was just a lot of emotional layers to unpack here, and the mystery of what happened to Aidan to make him forget so much just keeps getting deeper and more meaningful. But what is so great about Barzak is the mystery really isn't the point. The point is reminding us about greater life emotional truths.

"Maybe Jarrod's father wouldn't see things that way, and sure, there were probably alot of other people who would see things the way his father might. But what other people saw wasn't necessarily the truth. And in the end it was the one truly and totally not-normal thing about me-- the kind of sight I'd been born with-- that helped me understand and forgive the people who couldn't look at Jarrod and me and see us for who we were: just two people in love."

Bravo for another YA book with a deep, dark heart.

There's a lot to wonder about
By Dino A Mascolo
A high school senior struggles with the discovery that he's somewhat of a medium, and the mystery of how this may affect the well being of himself and his family. I found the story to be fast paced and I was just as eager to find out what was really going on as the main character. There's lots to wonder about love, homosexuality, fear, loyalty, and strength

Enjoyed it very much!
By M R Klein
When I settle in to read a book, I want to be taken away and entertained. I want to enjoy the language and rhythm. But most of all I want to feel the story well after I have closed the book. And this book had all of what I look for: This story continues to return to my mind often, as it brought up interesting ideas about our place in the interwoven supernatural and natural worlds, the legacy of sin, love, and the dynamic between mother and son. Wonders of the Invisible World is an intricate, many-layered tale told in well-crafted, plainspoken language about a boy on the cusp of manhood in search of the real story of his family, which turns out to be a story of long-rooted and gnarled sins that bind Aiden Lockwood’s family together more than the blood they share. As Aiden falls into the haunted center of the blackened apple tree in his family’s dead orchard, I thought about my own haunted journey of self-knowledge, and how that journey spins you through unexpected landscapes. I enjoyed the seamless supernatural and natural world that Aiden learns to see in the story, and it made sense to me. In particular, a highlight of the book was the psychic dynamic between Aiden and his mother. It is not often that I have read about a mother and son battling it out within the pages of a novel. Great book!
