Urban Elementalism

What starts as a grassroots urban renewal project, quickly turns into a paranormal mystery. I like urban elementalism, and anything that has to do with urban places generating mystical force. The author uses those contrivances in the story well, making the confluence of them dangerous, like I think they would be. But, she does it in such a way that the reader is able to draw their own conclusions, without getting preachy, or driving a particular agenda. Pleasantly surprised.

Organized around the thesis that "gender has been the most important factor in shaping the lives of European women," this sweeping history describes women's experience in terms of social groups and work, with chronology secondary. The approach, which revealed interesting themes in volume 1 ( LJ 5/1/88), is inadequate for the rapid changes of the 19th and 20th centuries. More minor flaws mar this volume. The section on prostitution flows directly into that dealing with performing arts, perpetuating an unfortunate old association. Women's struggles to organize trade unions are greatly oversimplified. Informative, yes; balanced, no

This is an interesting, informative, important contribution to the history
of sex and gender in European societies. Certainly we need greater understanding
of women's particular difficulties besetting them over the centuries. But do we not
as well need to appreciate the difficulties men encountered? The authors
focus nearly exclusively on women's difficulties, ignoring or tamping concern
for men's challenges. By giving men's issues short shrift, women are made out to be
victims and men the unspoken villains.

This book needs editing. Documentation is essential, but excessive
documentation is tedious.

With one million dead, and just as many forced to emigrate, the Irish Famine (1845–52) is among the worst health calamities in history. Because historical records of the Victorian period in Ireland were generally written by the middle and upper classes, relatively little has been known about those who suffered the most, the poor and destitute. But in 2006, archaeologists excavated an until then completely unknown intramural mass burial containing the remains of nearly 1,000 Kilkenny Union Workhouse inmates. In the first bioarchaeological study of Great Famine victims, Jonny Geber uses skeletal analysis to tell the story of how and why the Famine decimated the lowest levels of nineteenth century Irish society.

Seeking help at the workhouse was an act of desperation by people who were severely malnourished and physically exhausted. Overcrowded, it turned into a hotspot of infectious disease—as did many other union workhouses in Ireland during the Famine. Geber reveals how medical officers struggled to keep people alive, as evidenced by cases of amputations but also craniotomies. Still, mortality rates increased and the city cemeteries filled up, until there was eventually no choice but to resort to intramural burials. Deceased inmates were buried in shrouds and coffins—an attempt by the Board of Guardians of the workhouse to maintain a degree of dignity towards these victims. By examining the physical conditions of the inmates that might have contributed to their institutionalization, as well as to the resulting health consequences, Geber sheds new and unprecedented light on Ireland’s Great Hunger.

A Dark Exploration of Sexual Self-Discovery

This is sure to entertain (or repulse) readers, as it is a story about sexually depraved individuals who seek to possess one young woman named, Celia.

Celia's journey of sexual self-discovery is an intelligently written and deeply erotic adventure. It is a morbid, fascinating, and spellbinding tale. Each main character is well-developed: dynamic, reprehensible, and entertaining all at the same time. The storyline evolves quickly, leaving no room for boredom. There's a plethora of sex scenes--both explosive and savage--where Celia endures countless acts of sexual degradation (some very disturbing and twisted, so beware!). Also, there's quirky humor added to the mix, lightening the mood, especially during overly grim and oppressive moments.

A splendid and unique reading experience overall, I was just displeased with the ending. (Yet no star is deducted. M.S. Valentine delivers excellent erotica!). I sincerely hope she continues Celia's story, because it doesn't seem complete as of yet. I have even e-mailed her once, and she replied: "Not everything is written in stone." So there's hope! Another installment must be brewing! This book compiles the two volumes that were originally sold separately. I highly recommend erotica-lovers, especially those who love dark erotica, to buy a copy today!

Not much of a story going on here. More like reading memoirs. I thought it was very wordy to relay even the simpliest of events. I did not like the ending....too abrupt!
