Good at explaining the basics of GPS, VERY poor reference for actually building a software receiver

This book does a good job at explaining the fundamentals of GPS operation. It breaks things down to an understandable level and presents most material well. However, it is not thorough enough to be used to design a software receiver. The book covers Costas loops and DLL's in a very cursory manner. It is also filled with typos and other errors. If your actually attempting to build a software receiver, try some of these books: "Understanding GPS Principles and Applications" by Elliot Kaplan (Ed.), "Global Positioning System: Theory and Applications Volume 1" by B. W. Parkinson and J. J. Spilker (Ed.'s), "Global Positioning System: Signals Measurements and Performance" by P. Misra and Per Enge. These books are far more detailed and are relatively free of errors.

Wait for a revised 2nd edition

Lets face it, there are plenty of GPS textbooks on the market that satisfy all levels of inquiry.
My first criticism of the book is that the first six chapters are well covered in most of the standard texts. I believe that the primary reason someone would want to purchase this book is for the last few chapters, (particularly chapter 9 which discusses GPS software receivers), as well as for the accompanying Matlab source code in the textbook. (At least that was my reason).
My second criticism is that this book desperately needs an editor. There are a tremendous number of grammatical errors and spelling errors that I found incredibly distracting from the contents of the book. In addition, many of the illustrative plots used in the text have no units specified for the axes, and little description of the figures is given in the body of the text.
Finally, the code that is included at the end of each chapter is poorly organized and poorly documented. There are very few comments in the various code sections and the author insists on using terribly ambiguous variable names. All of which could be forgiven if the Matlab code provided actually worked!! Many of the routines in the all-important 9th chapter on GPS software receivers call user-defined functions that are not actually defined anywhere in the textbook! In an attempt to be proactive, I emailed the author and asked for a copy of the missing Matlab code and was told that the codes are not available for download.
Disappointing indeed! (I think that an accompanying CD with a snippet of IF data and a set of working Matlab codes would be a wonderful addition to a 2nd edition of the book.)
For what its worth, I think the approach taken in the textbook is great, but until a revised 2nd edition of the textbook is produced I would recommend that you save your money.

Vessey is professor emeritus of biological sciences at Bowling Green State University. He is the coauthor of Animal Behavior: Mechanisms, Ecology, Evolution. Joseph F. Merritt is a senior mammalogist with the Illinois Natural History Survey, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and the editor of the Journal of Mammalogy. About the Author
Edward Johnston (1872–1944) is regarded as one of the fathers of calligraphy and his books and teachings are credited with reviving the art of modern penmanship and lettering. The sans-serif Johnston typeface that appeared throughout the London Underground prior to the 1980s was his most prominent design. Johnston influenced a generation of British calligraphers and typographers, notably Eric Gill, and his students founded the Society of Scribes & Illuminators.

Father of Calligraphic Revival

This is an excellent volume by Edward Johnston, the individual responsible for the rediscovery of the broad edged pen and the revival of Calligraphy. He was the founder of "The Society of Scribes and Illuminators", London. This was his first published book and gives an excellent background for the student of calligraphy into the basic knowledge, formats and techniques of the scribes who produced the most beautiful books and documents in history. I would call this the "Bible" of the true craft. It is not a modern book with flashy photos or artwork. It is not from the perspective of a modern artist, learning to incorporate lettering into "art pieces". It is a volume which teaches you the basic historic fundamentals of lettering, layout, illumination, etc., geared to the production of books and documents. I highly recommend it.

Unreadable in Kindle version

The book is a wonderful, in-depth study of how to teach yourself what's in the title. Don't be turned away by first being presented with how to prepare a feather as a quill pen. They were still in use when this was written, you can still purchase goose feathers and follow the instructions (as I've done) to create a wonderful pen, or just skip it. This book is not a quick "teach yourself calligraphy in 30 minutes " but more like a college course that begins with the principles needed for a deeper understanding of the craft.

Even though I've read my Dover paperback version several times over the years, I can't read the Kindle version. Chapter, section, and other division titles and marks are scattered throughout the text of every page; not in one piece, but as individual words. I've been able to struggle through some pretty bad Kindle versions, but I'm going to delete this one. I get angry every time I see it in my library and remember I was charged for a book that obviously never passed under a human eye before being offered for sale.

Good book, very detailed and informative. But i warn you, the images in the kindle version are disrupted to say the least, I regret not paying the shipping and waiting because trying to discover the illustration will grant you a large headache and great frustration.

major topics of women's liberation

The book has a wide remit. It aspires to cover many of the major topics within women's and gender studies in the US. It reprints several recent research papers that the editors/authors consider significant. The phrase women's liberation figures prominently in several chapters. We see that the current status of women in the US is vastly freer than in recent decades, triggered in large part by the social upheavals of the 1960s.

One topic is the beauty ideal. This is still dominated in the media by the perceptions and stereotypes of a slender white female. Only gradually are other ethnicities appearing as alternate ideals. Another related topic is the problem of obesity and being overweight. Contrasting views are aired. Some feminists argue that there should be greater acceptance of size variation, instead of one ideal. The counterargument proposed is largely by health professionals, who point out that obesity triggers many deleterious effects, like increased risk of diabetes and heart attack and cancer. There is an irony that should be apparent to the reader. The esthetic acceptance of different body weights as a function of ethnicity is commendable from the viewpoint of a multiethnic society. But this very acceptance can lead to an acceptance of greater morbidity and mortality for some ethnic groups. The book does not attempt to resolve this, but to bring it to the forefront of the reader's attention.

Another topic is the persistent wage gap between men and women. Over decades, progress has been glacial in narrowing the gap. Some historical observations are proferred. But there is no expectation of any major change in the status quo.

In the description it said there was slight cover damage ...

In the description it said there was slight cover damage. That would have been acceptable, but the book is also folded and damaged on the inside. The pages have folds that run through the entire book. Some pages also have small tears on the edges. I paid 60$ for my copy, and it was definitely not worth that much with all of the damage.

This is a brilliant and incredibly well researched book analyzing a little known, but powerfully important, part of National Socialist history. I picked the book to read because it received such a stellar review by Michael Burleigh, the most renowned international authority on the Third Reich. Immediately, I was entranced by every aspect of Hale's account of an SS-sponsored expedition to Tibet in 1938-39. Hale goes way beyond doing a comprehensive book study of the subject. He actually conducted his own expedition to Tibet, retracing the steps that the SS-sponsored expedition leaders took and interviewing individuals who were either part of the expedition or who were associated with it. For example, throughout the book Hale provides astonishing information from his interviews with Bruno Beger, an anthropologist and SS member who would later be brought to trial and imprisoned for selecting over 100 inmates for "study" at Auschwitz . I would recommend Hale's book for anyone interested in the origins and perpetuation of Nazism. Himmler's Crusade is already a classic in the field. --David Kirk

A Brilliant Account of History

This is a brilliant and incredibly well researched book analyzing a little known, but powerfully important, part of Nazi history. I picked the book to read because it received such a stellar review by Michael Burleigh, the most renowned international authority on the Third Reich. Immediately, I was entranced by every aspect of Hale's account of an SS-sponsored expedition to Tibet in 1938-39. Hale goes way beyond doing a comprehensive book study of the subject. He actually conducted his own expedition to Tibet, retracing the steps that the SS-sponsored expedition leaders took and interviewing individuals who were either part of the expedition or who were associated with it. For example, throughout the book Hale provides astonishing information from his interviews with Bruno Beger, an anthropologist and SS member who would later be brought to trial and imprisoned for selecting over 100 inmates for "study" at Auschwitz (all of whom were gassed). I would recommend Hale's book for anyone interested in the origins and perpetuation of Nazism. Himmler's Crusade is already a classic in the field.

A bewildering (written) History Channel documentary

Remember Indiana Jones? Weren't those silly scenes fro "Raiders" quite hilarious, with the Nazis searching for the "Arc of the Covenant"? Well... read this book, and you may not find them so amusing next time around.

Christopher Hale, a BBC documentary producer, really knows how to present and tell a story, no matter how unbelievable and apparently preposterous it may seem at first. After all, what would the Nazis be doing in Tibet in 1938-39, right? Worng! Turns out they were there, and not on a picnic trip: they were actively looking for their Aryan roots, visting the forbidden city of Lhasa, meeting with the current regime (and making the British rather nervous at that), while the new Dalai Lama was being found and brought to Tibet .

The story of Ernst Schäfer -who after the war denied any wrongdoing to his allied captors- and his four team-mates makes for an enjoyable and very entertaining reading, while Hale's subtle but precise insights and ocassional humorous remarks all you (the reader) to participate on his unique documentary-producer perspective.

Far from offering his own ideological perspective, Hale limits himself to describing -with his keen ability to look beyond the evident and the superficial- closing up the book with a simple yet well structure "moral" (to give it a name) on the inherent dangers of believeing that myths are essentially harmless: as he's so clearly explained -and history frequently demonstrated- a nation's inherent and underlying beliefs can lead it to far away places.

In summary: if you enjoy cuddling up with a good history book, and don't feel the need to read a doctoral thesis on the occult roots of Nazism (for which Nicholas Goodrich-Clarke is the best path to follow), get a hold of this very well researched and smartly illustrated book (the pictures do tell a whole story here), written from the unmistakeable perspective of a TV-documentaries' producer (you feel like you're watching the documentary on the History Channel). It's an amazing story, proving once again that truth is always far ore incredible than fiction.

Should have been written by a real historian

C. Hale's "Himmler's Crusade" continues the scholarly
and sometimes not-so-scholarly attempt to examine
Nazi esotericism. The Nazi expedition to Tibet is a subject
not often commented on, never by mainstream historians
and infrequently by writers on Nazi mysticism. Unfortunately,
Mr. Hale should have done more research and gotten his facts
correct. He refers to the symbol representing the SS as
a "double thunderbolt." They are not thunderbolts but
double sieg runes, representing the pagan Germanic letter
for victory. Mr. Hale refers to Heinrich Himmler as "by far the best educated of the Nazi leaders.." Himmler had a degree
in agriculture fom Munich Technical College. Paul Joseph Goebbels, Minister of Propaganda, earned a doctorate in philology
from Heildelberg University. Goebbels had a background in many
bodies of knowledge. Himmler's intellectual background and experiences were quite pedesrtian compared to those of Goebbels.
On page 117, Mr. Hale writes " Himmler had rlvals for political power, but he also resented the cultural status of Alfred Rosenberg..." I hardly think this likely. Rosenberg was considered to be the outsider among the leading Nazis. He was a
subject of private jokes. His name seemed to identify him as Jewish. Himmler would not have been threatened by him.
In the sense that this book explores a previously unknown
chapter in Nazi history it is a welcome addition to the modern
historian. However, Hr. Hale should have done a more thorough
job in his research.
