Mostly there, but obviously not reviewed by Steve Vai

I'm nowhere near the level of Steve Vai on guitar, but I like to get his tab books to see what he's doing and try to learn some of it. That said, after reviewing this book against the recordings, it's pretty close. However, one song that really sticks out to me as not correct (at least how it is written) is Gravity Storm. There are a ton of notations for using the bar when I know for a fact Steve plays this almost all with bends. I was standing a foot away from him in a sound check, and took a video of him, playing Gravity Storm and he used the bar once during the entire song. He even talks about this song in interviews and how it was like a workout for his hand because of all of the bending. My point is, it may sound close, but it's not what he's actually playing. That leads me to question the accuracy of rest of the book.

Worth the buy

I Pre-ordered the book, and I received it perfectly on time.

A few notes about the book, it appears that the transcription was done by a very talented transcriber, but he/she did not have any background experience with Vai's work. It very well takes into account the proper fingering positions to achieve the desired tones, and I have yet to find a true error (in terms of the note being wrong, not taking into account the techniques used) in the music, but there are abundant errors within the tabs itself, stemming from the aforementioned techniques. Vai has made a strong point of the use of his pre-bending to make a Dive sound during Gravity Storm, emphasizing that the recording guitar was incapable of instantly-applied modulation of tuning via the Whammy bar (it didn't have a tremolo system installed). He did make heavy use of the Whammy pedal later in that same song though, so I guess I can see why the Transcriber would have been confused. (but only if he/she has never heard of Steve Vai.)

Like I said, I haven't yet found an error in the notes represented, and it doesn't look rushed. Overall, its a great piece of work that deserves your attention!

Learn how to be a "complete thinker" yourself

There are few people today who know G.K. Chesterton better than Dale Ahlquist. Besides being president of the American Chesterton Society and responsible for much of the renewed interest in Chesterton, Ahlquist has written many books on the twentieth-century maven including Common Sense 101: Lessons from G.K. Chesterton, G. K. Chesterton: Apostle of Common Sense, and In Defense of Sanity: The Best Essays of G.K. Chesterton.

Ahlquist's mastery is even more impressive considering how incredibly prolific Chesterton was. He wrote plays, political commentaries, novels, essays, mysteries, and theological texts. In all he completed over eighty books, hundreds of poems and stories, and more than 4,000 essays.

When you dip your toes into this massive corpus, one thing becomes immediately clear: Chesterton's skill at connecting many disparate ideas. He pulls equally from art, religion, beauty, politics, science, and philosophy. He was convinced that all these subjects are intertwined and that right-thinking about one led to right-thinking about the others. In one of his novels, for instance, he linked Darwinian evolution to political progressivism. In an essay, he tied the scientific theory of relativity to modernity's favorite philosophy, relativism.

Chesterton was convinced that "thinking means connecting things" and in Ahlquist's view, nobody did this better. Therefore if we want to become complete thinkers ourselves, then studying Chesterton is a great way. Ahlquist has produced a new book toward that end titled The Complete Thinker: The Marvelous Mind of G.K. Chesterton (Ignatius press, 264 pages, hardcover).

The book is not "straight" Chesterton; it's not just a collection of excerpts from Chesterton's writings. That's good, however, especially for beginners who are unfamiliar with Chesterton's daunting style. Instead, the book is a guided tour through Chesterton's major ideas with Ahlquist's commentary throughout.

In one chapter titled "The Universe and Other Little Things," Ahlquist shows how Chesterton tackled the paradoxical scale of the cosmos, one that is both shockingly vast and surprisingly cozy:

"Science boasts of the distance of its stars; of the terrific remoteness of the things of which it has to speak. But poetry and religion always insist upon the proximity, the almost menacing closeness of the things with which they are concerned."

Other chapters tie together the problem of evil, war and peace, politics and patriotism, and the limits of language. Chesterton's connections can be confusing at times, but that's where Ahlquist's commentary shines. It helps clarify Chesterton's notoriously pithy paradoxes.

Surprisingly, what I liked most about the book was the Appendix. Titled "Chesterton vs. Darrow," it recounts a forgotten debate between these two iconic, twentieth-century thinkers. Clarence Darrow was the Richard Dawkins of his day, representing progress, science, and the triumph of reason over faith. He's best known as the lawyer who defended John Scopes in the Scopes "Monkey" Trial. Chesterton, of course, stood for religion and common sense, two things Darrow dismissed as superstitious and backward.

The topic of the debate was "Will the World Return to Religion?", and in an interview with Catholic World Report, Ahlquist explained why he chose to include it in the book:

"Well, everyone seems to be familiar with Darrow's shellacking of William Jennings Bryan at the 1925 Scopes "Monkey Trial." But no one knows about the time six years later when Chesterton used Darrow as a mop to clean the floor in a big debate in New York. Chesterton made the great agnostic look rather foolish, and Darrow fans would prefer to forget the incident. So I have reminded them of it."

In the end, after hundreds of Chesterton quotes and excerpts, Ahlquist accomplishes his goal. In The Complete Thinker, he unveils the expansive genius of G.K. Chesterton which touched almost every topic under the sun. If you want to learn how to be a complete thinker, pick up this book and study under a true master.

A superb book!

This thematic study of some of G.K. Chesterton's writings by Dale Ahlquist is a must read. It highlights many of Chesterton's works by exploring a variety of topics as wide ranging as sin, eugenics (birth control) and economics to cite a few. Those seeking some understanding of many of today's societal and political topics would be well served by this book even though many of the Chesterton quotes date from the early early decades of the Twentieth Century. Chesterton's wisdom is that timeless. Chapter 12 which discusses Chesterton's economics and today's global economy, and the Appendix (the Chesterton versus Clarence Darrow debate) are each easily worth the price of the book.

Spoiler alert: The Chesterton/Darrow debate discussion offers some insight into how and why today's media promotes a Progressive agenda -- and has done since the 1920s.

If you are embarking on reading G.K Chesterton you should consider this book along with Dale Ahlquist companion books 'The Apostle of Common Sense" and "Common Sense 101". These are an excellent introduction when beginning what will likely become a lifetime passion of enjoying the writings of G.K. Chesterton. I had read Orthodoxy (Chesterton) and was impressed but puzzled. As I heard in a lecture by Mr. Ahlquist on your first reading you end up underlining the entire work, you read it again and realize you missed something and also that it appears to be even more profound than your first reading and by your third read you enjoy it even more. The works by Mr. Ahlquist put you into the Chesteron 'fast lane' from the start. Read these then start reading Chesteron. You will not regret a moment.

About the Author
Laurie Schneider Adams received a Ph.D. in Art History from Columbia University. She is Professor Emerita of Art History at John Jay College, City University of New York, where she taught art survey, and at the Graduate Center, where she taught courses on the Italian Renaissance and on Art and Psychoanalysis. She has published articles on iconography and on art and psychology. She is the editor of Giotto in Perspectiveand of the journal Source: Notes in the History of Art; the author of A History of Western Art, The Methodologies of Art, Art and Psychoanalysis, and Art on Trial; and co-author (with Maria Grazia Pernis) of Federico da Montefeltro and Sigismondo Malatesta: The Eagle and the Elephant and of 5 children's books (with Allison Coudert).

Art Across Time

The vastness of the world art subject is daunting but I believe that Laurie Schneider Adams in Art Across Time successfully covers the most crucial aspects including areas of non-western art. Such examples as Mughal Art and the Baroque or 19th Century Impressionism and Japanese Prints or Gauguin and Oceania in Post Impressionism are invaluable for their strategic placing and representation of non-western models. There are also highlighted tables throughout the book about contextual history as is the one on Scientific Experiment in the Enlightenment. Furthermore, the introductory chapter contains key issues about art as well as stylistic terminology, and art historical methodologies which are a necessary part of art history for beginners. The plates are beautiful and are accompanied at times with plans and maps that are useful aids in the teaching process. The Art Across Time, volume one and two, are extremely important to those college instructors teaching Survey in two semesters, but the volumes are also useful separately. Schneider Adams writes in a flowing discourse that is facile for the undergraduate to understand and explains difficult ideas in precise, well organized formats that are easily assimilated. To be sure there are tiny flaws in Schneider-Adams' Art Across Time, but the book comes as close to perfection as one can get given the magnitude of this area. Finally, the publisher is extremely helpful to instructors providing such teaching aids as cds, slides and the images on the web for wireless environment classroom teaching.

Shallow overview of too much information but...

This book saved my life in ARH 102 at ASU. The lecture was so awful and full of inaccuracy I could barely tolerate listening to it. Luckily this book contained basically the same info as what we covered in lecture and I managed to eek out an A by 7/10ths of a percent.

Unfortunately the copy I received as a loaner from Amazon was already falling apart -- the binding was broken and several pages were nearly falling out already... After a weeks use an entire chapter fell out in a chunk. The "Good condition" rating they gave it may have been a bit optimistic.

Our professor stated this book had the best images out of all the references he has looked at. Pretty high praise I think! There are some inconsistencies though with some of the subjects and which time period they represent.

He changed my life

I first read "Confessions" in 1967 when I was a law student who had figured out he didn't want to be a lawyer. After reading it, I decided that I belonged on Madison Avenue... and that I HAD to work at Ogilvy & Mather. I somehow talked my way into a job there... as a mailboy... and by the time I left a decade and a half later, I was one of the agency's top creative people. I recently retired... after a 38-year career in advertising at five different agencies. "Confessions" remains the best guide ever about how to run an agency, and how to hire one. And David Ogilvy was, without a doubt, the best boss I ever had.

I Confess "David Ogilvy" He's The Man!!

While in Uptown on the Northside of Chicago I found this amazing book at a used book store. What David shares with his listening audience is very inspirational. Besides giving you an amazing foundation David teaches you the following:

How to manage an advertising agency (admire people who work hard)
How to get clients
How to keep clients
How to be a good client
How to Build great campaigns
How to write potent copy
How to illustrate advertisements and posters
How to make good television commercials
How to make good campaigns for food products, Tourist destinations and proprietary medicines
How to rise to the top of the tree--advise to the young

Well these are only a few of the very powerful items that David Ogilvy shares. If you would like to know more just remember you will when you buy this book. It's just a wonderful resource that's well put together. When you read it you will agree. This book needs one more very important person....YOU.

A Classic from One of the Masters

While not as detailed or colorfully illustrated as his later work "Ogilvy on Advertsing," this is still a classic fillld with great information. The book is clearly a precursor to "Ogilvy on Advertising," as many of the same elements can be found in it.
Ogilvy has a wonderfully casual, yet occassionally pompous, style to his writing, but he clearly knows and understands advertising. He manages that rare combination of managing to teach while entertaining. Sometimes his ego and pride come across too strongly, but given the man's accomplishments, I'll cut him slack. And you may wonder why he starts off discussing his days as a chef in Paris, but he does a great job of analogizing that experience to his experiences with running an ad agency.
Highly recommended for anyone involved in advertising, particularly copywriters. Ogilvy was a copywriter and he clearly has a special admiration for those who write copy for a living. He also has great advice to share for anyone in advertising.

Out of Print !(Huge Shame)

This book is the final word on windows debugging. Not surprising since it comes from one of the authors of the award winning software: "Bounds Checker"
I really enjoyed the chapter on x86 assembly. It covers what needs to be known to read through assembly code when the debugger tosses it at you.
Trying to list all the good stuff in the book will take more time than I can devote right now. What I don't understand is why the book is now out of print. I'm sure some people out there still want to stick to native code and these people deserve to have this book. I'm happy I got mine before it went under.

Do you aspire to be a serious developer? If so, read this bk

John Robbins did a great job on this book. I was very impressed both on the depth and breadth of the issues treated.
At first, I though on skipping the chapter on Visual Basic debugging, since I am strictly a VC++ developer, but I am glad I did not. Even that chapter gave me insights that I can use on my day to day, for example, when he runs the VB compiler while in the debugger and is able to see how VB uses the C compiler's code generation (second pass).
Some great insights and lots of good example on how to resolve problems and how to use all the capabilities of the debugger to ones best advantage.
It will teach you what to do when the debugger gets you to a source line that before that line, everything is working properly, after that line the world has turned upside down. It will teach you enough X86 assembly to make you dangerous and be able to read between the (source) lines in the process. Even if you thought you knew it already.
Could it be improved ? Yes, can't it always ? Coverage on tracking memory leaks could be expanded, for example, to cover MFC's shortcomings when reporting them, but this book is a close to perfection as I have seen them.
And it is a great read too. His style is easy to follow, even though some of the subjects are deep and complex, but John transfers the knowledge so easily, it is amazing.
Once I completed my first read, I really felt like I had just finished listening to a very good rendition of a Beethoven or Mozart simphony.
Every developer that aspire to be a serious developer should read it and reread it.
And thank you, John Robbins. I will be buying every book you write.

Good, but could be even better

When I first heard John Robbins was writing a book on Win32 debugging, I was delighted. I've been a fan of his MSJ Bugslayer articles since the beginning, and John's debugging knowledge, displayed in those articles, has helped me tremendously.
However, for someone who has read all his MSJ work, this book is a bit of a disappointment. The reason is that the second part of the book is a collection of his (slightly-rewritten) MSJ articles, with almost no new content added as far as I can see.
The first part of the book, however, is worth every dollar, as other reviewers have already mentioned, even though I was missing coverage of the WinDbg debugger, and MS tools such as userdump. Maybe in a second edition?
To summarize, I suspect this book to be a 5-star for anyone who is fairly new to debugging and has not read John's MSJ columns. For others, who have been exposed to his columns, and have some experience, I'd rate this book 3-stars.

What a powerful first effort in this genre for Sidney. The story is tightly crafted and evokes erotic emotions for both the husband and the wife. I have no problem putting her in the company of Kenny Wright and Max Sebastian. I was concerned early in the story that she kept deflecting the conversation with her husband. It was neat twist that he read it and implemented it.
The writing is excellent, she commands the reader to get involved. The ending was very well done.

Outstanding first time effort !

This book is part of a trilogy Book 1 The Anklet Book 2 Stranger in Seattle Book 3 Red32 and I will be reviewing as is my custom the whole series at once.
The three titles in this trilogy by new author Sidney Sitravon offer a breath of fresh air to the HW genre that's both welcome and expanding and for a first time author these a quite a effort indeed.
The author is a pretty much straight up HW author there is no cuck/humiliation rubbish here (except bizarrely for a page or two in the absolute climax of the whole series which frankly did not fit in at all with the rest of the book, was completely inappropriate, felt like it was thrown in as a bad afterthought and should have been avoided). She treats the couples relationship itself as the prime character in the book and in my view that's always the correct way to treat the HW genre. What we have here is a well written, descriptive, romantic and definitely sexy psychodrama spread over three books. If I had any criticism it would be that it was really all the same story and it should have been one title but the author does have the sense to include a lot of the back story in titles 2 &3 so that they could (at a pinch) stand alone.
The authors style can be a little wordy but its not intrusive and her characters are both warm and easy to like as well as having that most difficult aspect in this subject area of being reasonable people, acting reasonably and most importantly realistically. The climax of book two stretches the realistic a little bit but not in a major way and the general sense of the story telling a tale of quite plausible circumstances remains throughout all three titles.
If you like a more considered, carefully written HW tale with a genuine loving and romantic couples feel to it I think that these three titles are among the best out there and I highly commend this book to be part of your library.
For a first time author in this area (despite the minor niggles which are to be expected) I think these three titles are actually outstanding.

Memorable, contemporary loving characters and hands down the best "Anklet" inspired story I've ever read.

I rarely leave reviews unless I truly feel the story stands within its genre as something exceptional. That is the case with The Anklet: A Wife with Stranger Tale. First and foremost what must be mentioned is it's deep character development - these are not one dimensional characters, more so Katelyn (our protagonist) is somebody I will REMEMBER - not just another hot wife to be forgotten a couple books later.

What truly drew me to this story (series) was the premise of "The Anklet" a rarely explored piece of hot wife jewelry. Luckily the anklet is much more then just a plot device to move this series along, no - its something akin to its own character. In a sense almost developing its own influence indirectly as it "effects" all those who come into contact in the most subtle ways. I truly love how the author managed to incorporate it within the story (nearly) as its own fetish, without becoming overbearing or forgotten later.

In regards to erotica content, its well written and visually imaginative without being repetitive with each scene standing on its own. I also feel its worth mentioning that these characters truly love one another and you feel it, this is not a hardcore cruel cuckold prissy story - something I'm grateful for in the sea of trash that liters the kindle store.

While book 1 is part of a series, it does stand well on its own providing a satisfying ending yet leaving the door open for more to come.

Highly recommended with memorable, contemporary characters and hands down the best "Anklet" inspired story I've ever read.

This book is a verse reconstruction of the lost Anglo-Saxon Saga of Waldere accompanied by scholarly articles, analysis and notes.

In 1860 Professor Werlauff of the Royal Library, Copenhagen, came across two leaves of Anglo-Saxon poetry which had been used in the binding of a book. Upon examination they turned out to be two fragments of a lost epic poem about a Germanic hero known in Anglo-Saxon as Waldere. Luckily, another version of the story is preserved in Waltharius, a Latin text written in the 10th century in Germany. The aim of this book is to reconstruct the epic of Waldere by merging the two principle sources and re-writing them in the style of a modern translation of an Anglo-Saxon original, such as Seamus Heaney did with Beowulf.

A most enjoyable retelling of a rarely-found tale

It was a daring undertaking to combine the fragments with the fuller Latin version of the story and to tell it in Anglo-Saxon poetic form. I'm not enough of an expert in the languages involved to evaluate his skill in using them, but the English result was great fun to read. I only regret that he Webster felt it necessary to avoid "Anglo-Saxonisms, such as kenning" as I believe they are as necessary to convey the original cultural context as his decision to adopt an A-S poetic structure and use alliteration when possible. The kennings so often capture something of the perspective that we would otherwise miss, that it seems to me better to simply provide information about them rather than avoid them. Still, this is a most enjoyable read and the introduction is well-written and contains the important guidance required for a deep appreciation and understanding of Webster's work which is, in the end, very much its own thing.

Excellent Retelling

This is an enjoyable retelling of an old tale. While it is written in verse, it is not monotonous like modern rhyming poetry can be when extended to the length of a novella. The additional materials besides the 3-part story itself add to the value. There is an older, more modern-style verse translation, which is interesting for comparison and may be clearer in some places. And the bits of Old English (with interlinear translation) relating to the story are great for OE fans. The notes are helpful, and point out places where Mr Webster has strayed a bit from the Latin in the interest of keeping it more in tune with the Germanic world.
