This protracted novel opens in rural Scotland, where David Corstorphine, overwhelmed by the death of his wife of 18 years, has sequestered himself at his parents' estate and devoted his energies to gardening. He is then dispatched to the United States after a crisis in the family-owned distillery business, where he falls apart at an important meeting after being asked about his marital status. Retreating to a friend's home on Long Island, David senses that the anonymity he enjoys in this setting is the remedy for his problems. A temporary job as a gardener for a wealthy two-career couple and their troubled son sets the stage for David's renewal, as he helps the boy to come out of his shell, endearing himself to the boy's lovely mother, whose troubled marriage leaves her unsatisfied. Meanwhile, the managing director at the distillery has been plotting to take over the company in David's absence. Actress Samantha Eggar reads both abridged and unabridged versions with dramatic flair, distinct characterizations, and lively accents. The usual ingredients of heartbreak, corporate-takeover, and budding romance lead to a fairly predictable concoctionin a first novel by Robin, son of Rosamunde. Having lost his wife to cancer some months earlier, fortysomething David Inchelvie has all but retreated from the world, cocooning himself in grief and memories of his beloved Rachel. Heir and executive of Glendurnich Distilleries, he's taken a leave of absence and started tending his parents garden in remote Scotland, forcing his old father, Lord Inchelvie, out of retirement. When the highly suspect managing director, Duncan Caple, asks David to take a short business trip to the States, the plotting begins, as do some of the novel's more obvious shortcomings. Experiencing an emotional breakdown at his business meeting, David escapes to a friend's house in Long Island, where he procures a job as gardener to a wealthy yuppie couple. Hiding his identity, he becomes a virtual savior to the family: confidant to the housekeeper Jasmine, surrogate father to little Benji, and a masculine ideal to wife Jennifer. Everything blooms under his wise care. Meanwhile, trouble brews back in Scotland. In a plan to usurp control of the Inchelvie dynasty, Caple gets rid of some trusted employees and encourages the old man to stay home and rest. Oblivious to the nefarious goings-on, David continues slowly to recover his hope and mental balanceso much so that he sends for his three children to join him for an American holiday. Immediate warmth is generated (Jennifer's husband Alex is conveniently away having an affair) when David receives news that his father has suffered a stroke upon learning that he may lose his company. Can the rejuvenated David save the day? More distracting than the predictable storyline are the oversimplified characterizations of Piltcher fils: children are sweet, Americans happy, the villains villainous. Traditional to a fault. Like Mother, like Son

However Robin's book is set at a much-faster pace than his mom's books. It has everything in it, romance, true love, intrigue, despair, hope, humor and happiness. It is a great read ~~ you won't be able to put it down right away! It seems to be a hefty book but it's not. If it starts out slow, don't give up. The best is yet to come.
When I started this book, I had the impression that it was going to be a dark, gloomy book ~~ but that impression changed half way through it. David had just lost his wife Rachel to cancer and unable to cope with anything, he starts working on his family gardens. Sent to America on a marketing job for a few days, David realizes that he couldn't face Scotland without Rachel and applies for a gardening job. Then he becomes involved with a family that he works for.
This novel is a progression of a man's journey through grief only to find hope and love again. It is an emotional book and one that you can't put down easily. You just keep turning the page, promising yourself that this page is going to be it for the night ~~ only to turn the page again. You find yourself rooting for the characters ~~ and by the end of the book, you feel as if the sunshine has come upon you as well as David.
Take it and read it ~~ don't be discouraged by the different writing style ~~ there will never be another Rosamunde Pilcher ~~ but Robin is unique and creative in his own way. His mom should be proud of him.

Simple and Lovely

This book was a joy to read. I found it heartwarming, simple and sweet, and although other readers objected to what they thought was a simplistic and cliched plot, I did not.
The story concerns upper-class Scotsman David Inchelvie, who has lost his beloved wife Rachel to cancer. The untimely death of his life's partner has thrown David into a deep and dangerous depression, and forced his elderly father, Lord Inchelvie, to go back to work at the family's renowned distillery. For David, wallowing in his own grief, has brought his children back to his parents' estate, literally dropped them into his parents' care, and taken to the garden, where he is knee-deep in mud all day long. Yes, of course the mud is a metaphor for David's state of mind, and of course it is obvious. But it works.
Although the estate has a perfectly good gardener, David is only sane when he can dig, weed, plant, and work with his hands, as hard as any laborer. Only when he is thoroughly exhausted can he get through his days. His parents are worried sick, and his children need him, but he cannot pull himself out of the mire, literally or figuratively.
But things at the brewery are in sorry shape, as the unscrupulous general manager, who now has the sharp and heretofore cutting-edge boss's son out of the way, is planning nefarious deeds. Duncan Caple is not worried about the old man, as the Lord is easy to fool. But he wants David far away as he schemes to sell out the family's old and elegant business. Therefore, he sends David to America on a largely phony business pretext, and David, barely able to pull himself together, reluctantly agrees.
America is where David starts to notice the sun again. In a lovely village on Cape Cod, he passes himself off as a day laborer, and gets a job with Jasmine, whose philandering husband is off doing what he does best. David finds a small cottage, a horribly smelly dog, an unpretentious seaside village quite unlike what he is used to in Scotland, and a small boy who needs a father figure. And so the plot winds along to its inevitable conclusion, predictable, but wonderful.
What saves this book from banality is Pilcher's utterly ingenuous style, his obvious sincerity, his total honesty and the fact that he cares for his characters very much. In addition, he is a good writer who keeps the plot moving along with good descriptions, interesting plot twists, and a story that holds one's interest.
Is the son as good as the mother? Probably not, but in my view, this first novel holds great promise, and I am anxious to begin his just-released new book!

This book is an enjoyable, non-stop read! It is NOT a book of sex, violence or corrupted values. It is a FUN book to read--and we don't get enough of that anymore. Robin Pilcher has continued his mother's moral values! I have read all of her books and hope that I will be reading more of his!

When the eighteen-year-old intelligent but nerdy college student, Henry Talbot, attends a party at a frat house, his life is forever changed after he meets the exceedingly tall, beautiful Barbara Hopkins, a fellow student and basketball player.

Initially stunned that she should take an interest in someone like him, he begins dating her but during a meal at a restaurant Henry embarrasses Barbara when he is especially rude to the waitress attending their table.

Following the meal, he is given an ultimatum, either he allows Barbara to spank him for his bad behaviour or their relationship is over. Henry readily accepts her punishment which she delivers using her hand and a hairbrush, and although painful, it is clear that he is also sexually aroused by it. He is further humiliated when Barbara insists that he apologise to the waitress and even worse, show her the proof that he has been spanked.

Thus begins a female led relationship with the dominant Barbara who disciplines him with a variety of spanking implements including hairbrush, paddle, cane and tawse, whenever he steps out of line or doesn't meet her expectations. And it's not only Henry that participates in such a relationship as several of his friends later find themselves being subjected to rigorous discipline from their dominant girlfriends, who are often encouraged by Barbara.

Later, when Henry is introduced to Barbara's parents it becomes all too clear where Barbara gets her dominant tendencies from as her mother, Caroline, is very much in charge of the household, as Henry discovers when he spies her disciplining her own husband in the study.

Having spent some months together, the couple announce their engagement - it looks like sitting comfortably may be a thing of the past for Henry!

Training Henry would be a good description of this book

If you like stories of bare bottom spankings then this book is for you. Along with spanking it has paddling and caning .It has a young man named Henry meeting a beautiful woman Barbara who changes his life dramatically. The story then starts to include other men who don't know how to behave and Barbara teaches there girlfriend's how to change them. The book has many twists in it some I expected due to reading the synopsis others I was surprised by others .If I could rate this book higher I would .It is a real good read.

Really a Spanking Book

The book is certainly not what I was hoping to read. I love the freedom books but this book begged the question, "How many ass whippings are enough?" The book became tiresome, even when her mother brought her implements to bear as mom beat dad.I think the audience for this book was a fetish group, a really small group. Most of us didn't mind the whipping since we all know how conniving and unfaithful they can be but Barbara had a good guy so I didn't understand why she was so tough on him.
My opinion, too much spanking.

The author does a good job of developing the characters

Well-written story. The author does a good job of developing the characters, both the two main characters, and the side characters which really helped make the book an enjoyable read. Many well-described spanking scenes and right level of related sex scenes. Would be interested in a sequel.

An Extremely Important Book

This book must be read again and again. It provides the keys to success, happiness, and health. It explains how to accomplish those goals regardless of what is going on in the world. I highly recommend it. Everyone should read it.

Interesting read....from a manager's viewpoint, not from an engineer's

In a very easy-to-read book, Birla uses his vast experience in FedEx to outline how the philosophy of FedEx evolved and thrives on innovation. The vantage point enjoyed by the author certainly reflects in this "big picture" viewpoint of one of the better known company's growth. Of particular interest is the notion of innovation ( spelt with an "i") dealing with process improvements and Innovation (spelt with an "I") dealing with business model changes. The author provides an interesting discussion on what constitutes innovation and how FedEx defined (or didnt define) it. The rest of the book explains how a 5-dimensional employee base can be created. This discussion is certainly novel and adds some interesting perspective for anyone involved in managing people and/or processes.

Though the book will certainly please any "managerial-type" reader, I was a bit disappointed to see that the author's vast engineering experience was essentially untapped in this book. There is no meaningful discussion on the operational side of "how " FedEx actually implemented innovation....In that sense, the title is a little misleading for an engineering-minded reader. Regardless, this is an excellent read, provides a different perspective on how innovation should be seen, and a broad paradigm that enables developing an employee-base committed to and thriving on innovation. A good read. (It may be interesting to read this book along with the autobiography of Kinko's founder - "Copy This!". FedEx's buying of Kinkos is discussed in this book and for even a casual observer the synergy between these two companies seems real.)

A must read, the book is more than just about FedEx

There is not a manager or executive throughout the world who would not benefit greatly from reading this book. In only 200 pages Madan captures the very essence of what is needed by any business in order to survive and thrive in today's economy.

Through the story of FedEx he both illustrates why companies need to engender a culture of innovation and, also sets out exactly what is needed to execute on that strategy. Any negativity on the part of a reader will have more to do with their own personal doubts or fear of failure, for the ideas are sound and well illustrated.

In the work I do I spend a lot of time reading management and success books, this is one of the best that I have read in a very long time. The linkage between Strategy, People, Process and Systems is as strong as I have ever seen.

About the Author

Justin Rajewski first got started with FPGAs over a summer internship with Northrop Grumman before his senior year of high school. Before this, a SparkFun blog post had piqued his interested in FPGAs, but he was frustrated with the lack of information available for beginners. After a few summers working with FPGAs as an intern, and some formal classes at Stanford University, Justin created the Mojo, an FPGA development board targeted specifically for beginners. He then launched a hugely successful Kickstarter for the Mojo. Justin continued to work on the Mojo and has even gone so far as to create an IDE with a new beginner-friendly language, Lucid.

Smith, longtime sports--broadcasting historian, certainly understands this notion as he offers his provocative selection of the top 101 baseball announcers of all time, from the pioneers of the 1920s (Graham McNamee) to today's best (Jon Miller, Skip Caray, Tim McCarver). Each entry lists (and judges) a broadcaster's longevity, continuity, awards, fan popularity, use of language, quality of voice, and knowledge--ending with a point total and ranking. Most impressive is Smith's encyclopedic yet readable essay on each broadcaster, many of whom he seems to have known personally. His top pick, Dodger announcer Vin Scully, may be beyond argument; everyone else is fair game. Readers will probably agree with many of Smith's picks--Red Barber, Harry Caray, and Mel Allen near the top--while finding other selections, well . . . ludicrous: Jack Brickhouse, God rest him, higher than ESPN's Jon Miller or Seattle's Dave Niehaus? Absolutely Awful!!

Because there is really nothing like it, Smith's 'Voices of the Game' works despite the author's continual self-indulgence. The stories remain compelling even when the author is offering prose that is, at most times, numbing. Smith is the authorial version of a speaker in love with the sound of his own voice.

Like his dreary MLB Blog, Smith's 'Voices of Summer' is nothing but bits and pieces of fluffy rambling rehashed, regurgitated, and spun over and over and over again. The ratings system, which Smith seems to be quite proud of, is not really all that impressive and appears to offer a weak excuse for Smith to tell readers all about his favorites. Granted, I wasn't looking for objectivity here, but why bother...just rate the voices and give us your opinion.

Unfortunately, Smith's opinions are mostly incoherent blurbs in which the author mixes odd bits of old books with choppy sentences that pretend to grand eloquence. What should have been a pleasant book about a very pleasant subject was, all too often, a painful and sickening experience. Sickening? Yes. Sickening. I wanted my money back less than halfway through.

I gave it one star, which was being generous since I ended up loathing this book. Worse, it actually makes the failings of 'Voices of the Game' more telling.

For a former presidential speech writer, Smith is a pretentious and overly wordy author who, frankly, just isn't that good. This book was a sham and one wonders what he can offer in an upcoming biography of Mel Allen that others - more talented by far - have not already offered.

Bottom line. Avoid this stinker and, if you have to read Smith, pick up 'Voices of the Game' because everything in this book is there in a more coherent and interesting format.

Smith writes. Reader reads. Headache starts.

Baseball on the radio is truly a beautiful thing. As a child I use to lay in bed at night and fall asleep listening to Dodger games. Vin Scully painted vivid pictures of not only the action on the field, but the atmosphere in the stadium. Even today, as an adult, I find it more enjoyable to listen to Giants and A's games on the radio, because Jon Miller and Bill King are great announcers. With that backdrop you can imagine how excited I was to recently receive this book as a birthday present, and how dissappointed I was after reading it.

Curt Smith writes in a style that at best could be described as eclectic, and at worst ragtag. Everything is written in a disjointed, stream of consciousness format that leaves the reader confused and reaching for the Tylenol.

Reading this book reminded of the first time I read Shakespeare (9th grade/"A Midsummer Nights Dream"). I wanted to enjoy the writing, but was at times thoroughly frustrated by the text. Part of me wanted to cry, the other scream at the top of my lungs.

Despite my love of baseball, and my fondness for radio announcers, I could not recommend this book.

Poorly Written Subjectivism

Curt Smith knows a lot about the history of baseball broadcasting, but the pity of it is that he has no idea of how to translate that knowledge into a great book. "Voices Of The Game" written in 1987 and revised in 1992 was undermined by his very bad, disjointed writing style, and compounded by his annoying intrusion of his subjective personal opinions about the merits or lack thereof in certain baseball broadcasters. I have never forgiven Smith for his obnoxious dismissal of the work of Yankees broadcaster Frank Messer (1968-1985) in a single phrase calling him "dull as a greasepocked pan", and his refusal to understand that for Yankee fans of that era, it wasn't Phil Rizzuto or Rizzuto and Bill White, it was Rizzuto, MESSER and White who made listening to Yankee baseball in the 70s and early 80s great. Messer might not have been Smith's cup of tea as a broadcaster, but his career at least merited some acknowledgment if this was to be a truly objective chronicle of baseball broadcasting because there were plenty of people out there who wouldn't share Smith's view on that point (just as I am a person who absolutely despises Jon Miller's broadcasting, an announcer Smith will never hesitate to gush endlessly about, but I would never let my feelings prevent me from acknowledging the following that Miller does have with others).

I mention these prefatory remarks to note that in this new book, Smith's writing has become more shallow and his focus even more so. Now we are getting profiles of 101 great announcers, in profiles that are mostly verbatim rehashes of what we saw in "Voices Of The Game" only more disjointed and even less coherent. To his credit, Smith has evidently made peace with some of the announcers whose work he ripped in the past like Gary Thorne of the Mets, Monte Moore of Oakland etc. and I even applaud the fact that he's willing to acknowledge that John Sterling has a following among Yankee fans despite the shrill blastings he gets from New York media critics. But I'm sorry, you can not include Phil Rizzuto and Bill White on this list and leave Messer out (And include Hawk Harrelson for God's sake?????). A more competent baseball writer, Bruce Markusen, has noted how Messer's low-key approach of competent professionalism was the perfect tonic in the Yankee booth to the witty exchanges of Rizzuto and White. Nine innings of Rizzuto and White would have been overkill, but with Messer in the mix, the blend was perfect. Yankee broadcasting went into a tailspin after Messer was dismissed in 1985 and it took seven years for them to land on their feet with the arrival of the John Sterling-Michael Kay tandem.

Smith also is not someone who aggressively does his homework on baseball's broadcasting past, but seems content to just recycle his 20 year old notes, because in addition to rehashing almost verbatim comments from his 20 year old book, he's amazingly still repeating a goof from "Voices Of The Game" that should have been corrected long ago. On page 230, in his profile of Giants broadcaster Lon Simmons, Smith quotes verbatim the famous NBC Radio call of Willie McCovey's liner to Bobby Richardson ending Game 7 of the 1962 World Series. The only problem though, is that call was made by George Kell, not Simmons (Simmons, contrary to the profile listing, was never part of the NBC Radio crew for the 62 WS. All of the games were called by Kell and Joe Garagiola).

Someone else needs to rescue the history of baseball broadcasting from what Curt Smith has done and write a better book (something similar to David Halberstam's 1999 "Sports On New York Radio"). It will be a pity if our long-term reference works on baseball broadcasting will have to consist of Smith's badly written subjective opinions that muddle up so much of the meaningful information there is for us to learn about.

This book is a must read for everyone. I believe that the "emotional available" human is rare. In our society we are not taught to be emotionally available. This book helps to understand what being emotionally available looks like, how to handle people who are "emotionally unavailable" and those people who are toxic. I couldn't put this book down because it was so relevant to my life. I had a habit of choosing emotionally unavailable/toxic partners but because of this book I will not be making the same choices.

This is not a training manual in the sense it goes into detail. The manual lists topics to cover but without an instructor or in depth knowledge it isn't very useful. I scanned it and decided that I had to have a more detailed manual.
