Decent Tool for Students

I picked up SUPER READING SECRETS because I was and am still interested in learning as much as I possibly can. Being able to increase my reading speed would allow me to read more books than I can now and in turn I would learn more information. After reading the book, I do know how to increase my reading speed. The techniques that Berg suggests in SUPER READING SECRETS really do work, however, they are not something I intend to do frequently. I like reading. Even when studying, I take pleasure from most things I read. For me, there really isn't much distinction between reading for pleasure and reading for information and reading for studying. Just about everything I read is for pleasure. Most of the techniques that are suggested in the book are directed towards reading for information and reading for study.

Besides the speeding reading tips, the book is also full of useful study techniques and tips. If I was still a student in high school or college and had never discovered these tips and techniques on my own, then I would have found these parts of the book to be quite useful. However, since I already knew about these techniques I didn't get much out of these parts of the book either.

True to the title, SUPER READING SECRETS really does explain how a person can learn how to read one-page in three seconds. It takes time, but it does work. Students who have trouble studying from high school and college will get the most from this book. However, if you're someone like me who likes to read (even most textbooks) for pleasure, then you probably won't gain much from reading this book.

Good studying guide almost fullfills promise

Mr Berg book is an interesting approach to not so much speed reading than strategic reading, or rather culling, of information. Although there are speed-reading technniques per se that are well-explained in his tome, a lot of the material covered deals with planning so that you can "speed-scan" the book. He, as well, spends some pages on allied disciplines that are useful studying adjuncts. Mnemonics, memory rhythm manipulation, the use of music as recall device are summurily explored. The extensive bibliography that he provides will allow to explore these avenues further if you are so inclined. The book is a softer sell than the infomercials. Interestingly, Mr Stern does admit to some slight chicanery in his public demos...
Although it will increase your reading speed, do not expect results in the range that Mr Berg claims... as he is not really reading each and every word on the page. The book is just an okay buy in terms of content but it is so cheap that if one is interested one should buy it.

Compact & useful training guidelines

i read this book and immediately applied the techniques into practice - the result is that you don't really can remember everything you read, but you learn an efficient method how to see the essential information in the text. the book does not waste time on providing reading examples (when it does, the appendix does not contain it), but gives you on-hand instructions to learn the technique. In my experience, you don't have to follow them exactly, e.g. i didn't tape the time intervals for the exercises. the most important is that you practice - whatever exercise it is - on a regular basis. However, the book often repeats itself, one exercise was almost the same as the previous. also, you don't learn too much more specific scientific background information.

About the Author

Robert B. Cooter, Jr. currently serves as Dean of the Annsley Frazier Thornton School of Education and Ursuline Endowed Chair of Teacher Education at Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky. Author of numerous books and articles on reading instruction, his primary research focuses on the improvement of literacy instruction for children living at the poverty level. From 2006—2011 Cooter was co-editor of The Reading Teacher, the world’s largest circulation refereed journal for literacy educators (International Reading Association).

 

Dr. Cooter previously served as the first “Reading Czar” (associate superintendent) for the Dallas Independent School District (TX). In 2007, he and colleagues J. Helen Perkins and Kathleen Spencer Cooter received the national Urban Impact Award from the Council of Great City Schools. His latest work involves the implementation of a new Ph.D. program at Bellarmine University focused on developing “change agents” interested in improving education outcomes for children living in poverty circumstances.

 

E. Sutton Flynt currently serves as Professor of Literacy Education and Director of Teacher Education at the University of Memphis. Dr. Flynt has almost 40 years of teaching experience as a classroom teacher in the public schools, university professor, university department chairperson, and dean of a college of education. He has consulted with school districts in eight different states and served on state departments of education task forces in Louisiana, Kansas, and Tennessee.

 

Dr. Flynt has numerous professional publications in his areas of interest primarily focusing on literacy assessment, pre-service teacher preparation, and content area reading instruction. In 2007—2008 he coauthored a featured column on content literacy in The Reading Teacher. He has frequently presented scholarly works at such professional venues as the World Congress on Reading, the Annual Conference of the International Reading Association, the American Educational Research Association, and the Society for Research on Educational Effectiveness. Professor Flynt’s most recent research has focused on empirically determining the efficacy of Response to Intervention (RTI) Tier II commercial materials on the literacy achievement of K—2 students in urban and rural school districts.

 

Kathleen Spencer Cooter is Professor of Early Childhood/Special Education and School Leadership at Bellarmine University in Louisville Kentucky. Previous to fall 2008, she was Associate Professor of Special Education at the University of Memphis. In addition she served as outreach coordinator for the New Teacher Center, an exciting project working in conjunction with the Memphis City Schools to enhance teacher retention in urban schools. Professor Cooter also served as principal investigator for the Tennessee Early Intervention System (TEIS) serving the needs of children of over 3,000 families in West Tennessee.

 

Prior to joining the Special Education faculty at the University of Memphis, Dr. Cooter and a group of parents and committed community and university leaders raised some $3 million and founded the Texas Christian University RISE School, now known as Kinderfrogs, a special school serving the needs of infants with Down syndrome. In October of 2001, Dr. Cooter received the “Employer of the Year Award” from the Fort Worth business community for her successes in employing adults with Down syndrome as staff members at the TCU RISE School. Together with Starpoint School, a special school for students having learning disabilities, Cooter directed the teaching and research activities of both TCU’s laboratory schools. Upon her leaving in December 2003, TCU announced that a new wing would be added to Starpoint School as a gift from a grateful benefactor and named in her honor.

 

For two decades Professor Cooter worked as a teacher and administrator in both private and public schools serving children with special learning needs. As a teacher, Dr. Cooter worked primarily with special education students in preschool, elementary, middle and high school settings. Kathy was honored as a Texas Teacher of the Year in her role as a special education professional.             For more than fifteen years Kathleen Cooter has developed and served as the lead professor in a popular course for practicing school leaders known as the Principals’ Fellowship in Texas, Tennessee and Kentucky. This program has been credited with helping to turn around low performing schools’ in the areas of reading and writing.

Good but NOT bilingual

Although the CRI is advertised as a bilingual measure what you are purchasing is the manual with the English materials and a code to access the Spanish component online through Pearson PDTool Kit. The problem is that not all of the Spanish materials have been developed. I was in contact with Pearson for over a week to see if the content and media people had forgotten to upload some files but received an official answer that there was no error: the materials were simple non-existing. Some of the materials that are not available include the flash cards/word lists and the reading attitude interview. I did contact the authors to let them know of this issue and they replied positively on the same day. Maybe they'll develop them eventually?

I only gave the product three starts because some of the other subtests like the reading comprehension and miscue analysis are pretty good. The fine print is: BEWARE NOT FULLY BILINGUAL.

Great for assessing students and planing Response to intervention plans.

I've used the Flynt/Cooter reading inventory before and found it very useful. I like the intervention planning in the back of the book. With this product, I was hoping for different stories than the older book, but the stories are the same.

Passages are not directly translated thank goodness. Not exactly authentic but certainly better than most. The translations take culture into consideration and this is important.

This book was written by my Great Grandfather Dr. Wm Wesley Cook. It is still in print and still used to teach hypnotism. I remember my Mother and Grandmother telling stories about "Papa" and how he could stop you in your tracks and make you do something. I was in awe. I never met him but feel his influences in my life because of who and how he was.

Sanity and the facts - at last

David Nutt answered all my questions about drugs - how they work, why people take them and what we can do about it. If you want the truth, the facts and clear, sane responses to drug policy, this book is for you. The only question that will remain after reading it is "why is our policy on drugs so wrong-headed?".

Useful Perspective

Reviewer Waterman points out some unsettling flaws in Nutt's book. However, I still recommend this book for its overall approach which emphasizes the comprehensive harm assessment of drugs - including alcohol and tobacco. Comprehesive harm includes not only the impact on the user but also the cost to society under current laws. From this very useful perspective it becomes clear that alcohol is our number one "drug problem", and society's experience in dealing with this problem is very instructive. Heroin and crack cocaine are problems number two and three, and the criminalization of these drugs has clearly failed to minimize their harm. Nutt goes on to consider the comprehensive harm done by another 17 "drugs". The disconnect between each drug's comprehensive harm and western society's criminalization of the use of the drug is striking. Nutt makes a convincing case for a more pragamatic and less moralistic approach to minimizing the harm of drugs. His arguments are extensive and well organized. If you suspect that there must be a better way to approach society's "drug problem" but need a framework for exploring alternatives, then this book is worth reading.

Professor David Nutt has created one of the most accessible books to date on reducing the harms of legal and illegal drugs. "Drugs Without the Hot Air" is an examination on basic types of drugs; such as stimulants, depressants, opiates and psychedelics. Dr. Nutt does an exceedingly good job at being as politically unbiased as possible throughout the book. He doesn't care if a drug is Class A (Schedule 1 here in the US) or legalized, he only cares about the science behind it's relative harm to the user and society as a whole.

While he was on the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) he created a list of sixteen different types of harm with which drugs would be rated on, and the results are fairly surprising for the uninitiated. With this framework in mind he is able to give a wonderful examination into our government's insane scheduling of drugs. He is eager to point out that we already have two drugs that have have no medical benefit legalized for recreational use (tobacco and alcohol), as a society we are unwilling to admit our faults in hastily demonizing drugs that have potential therapeutic uses, such as MDMA , psilocybin and LSD.

About the Author
J. David Cooper (Ed.D., Indiana University) is a retired professor from Ball State University. Prior to teaching at the college level, he taught at elementary and secondary schools in Louisville, Kentucky. Dr. Cooper has served as a consultant to the Department of Education in Washington, D.C., numerous state departments of education, and school systems throughout the country. Active in the International Reading Association, he has spoken in all 50 states and eight countries. Dr. Cooper has authored or coauthored more than 20 books on the teaching of reading. He has served as an editor of the Indiana Reading Quarterly and as a reviewer for such leading journals as The Reading Teacher, Journal of Reading, and National Reading Conference Yearbook. Currently, Dr. Cooper continues to write and resides in Key West, Florida.

Michael D. Robinson (M.S. Ball State University) retired as the curriculum support specialist and Director of Reading, English, and Language Arts K-12 as well as the coordinator of multi-tiered systems of support (MTTS) and Problem Solving/Response to Intervention (PS/RtI) for Monroe County Public Schools in Florida. Formerly, he was a Curriculum Support Specialist in the Miami-Dade County Public Schools where he developed curriculum and served as a Master Coach in reading and language arts. He taught second, third, and fourth grades and was a Title I Coordinator, Reading Specialist, and Federal Grants Coordinator in Marion, Indiana. Mr. Robinson, who supervised student teachers while studying at the University of Illinois, is coauthor of SUCCESS WITH RTI: EASY, RESEARCH-BASED STRATEGIES FOR MANAGING RTI, and CORE READING INSTRUCTION IN YOUR CLASSROOM.

Jill Ann Slansky (Ed.D. University of Colorado) is a retired National Reading Consultant and University professor. She has taught many courses in Reading/Language Arts, Assessment, and Curriculum Development. In addition, she has provided Professional development for teachers in 49 states and three foreign countries. Her strong knowledge of practical classroom techniques comes from her experience as an elementary teacher, a middle school remedial reading teacher, and a teacher of special education children. Currently, Ms. Slansky serves on the Board of the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education.

Nancy D. Kiger (Ed.D., Ball State University) worked for more than 40 years in education. In her last 15 years of teaching, at the University of Central Florida's College of Education, she taught courses in reading, language arts, and children's literature as well as supervised student teachers. She also taught at universities in Indiana and Missouri. She began teaching as an elementary classroom teacher and later taught reading at the elementary and middle-school levels in Indiana. She was a writer and editor of literacy materials for over 25 years. Nancy Kiger died in 2009.

Well-written Book on End Times Fascination and Israel's carte Blanche Defence

This book written by a self-described British agnostic is a gem. I am a Christian and some years ago was an ardent defender of dispensational theology. The author is well versed in the history of Zionism both in terms of Christian Zionism which is so rampant in the USA today, and its earlier proto-type in England and other places. I enjoyed reading about the encounters that Clark had traversing various places to get insight into the movement among North American fundamentalist religious evengelicals. She is fair in her presentation for the most part. I was slightly perturbed by her constant reference to the SBC as the Southern Baptist Conference, instead of the well-known largest protestant denomination, the Southern Baptist Convention. Also, Clark misapplied a catch all label to amillennial eschatology as being allegorical/idealist, which is not necessarily the case. But these are minor inaccuracies in a well written book. Armageddon Outta Here!

If you seek an explanation for why the world is in the mess it's in -- especially referring to U.S. foreign policy and our endless wars -- seek no further! This book traces Christian Zionism way back to its centuries-old roots and shows how its history is profoundly entangled with that of the U.S. and England -- and continues to be so today. This is a profoundly important book for anyone not yet crushed under the heel of political correctness. Yes, you can be opposed to the policies that grow out of Christian Zionism without being anti-Semitic, despite propaganda to the contrary.

Useful study of a dangerous ideology

This fascinating book exposes the unpleasant ideology of Christian Zionism. Christian Zionists believe that the road to heaven on earth lies through a final battle of Armageddon in which all non-born-again Christians, and two-thirds of all Jews, will be killed. No wonder then that the Anglican clergyman Naim Ateek called Christian Zionism `the worst anti-Semitism one can imagine'.

We are all familiar with the tired old Zionist claim that all anti-Zionism is really anti-Semitism in disguise. The existence of Christian Zionism proves that there are anti-Semites who are pro-Zionist. There are of course also anti-Zionists who are anti-Semites. There are anti-Semites on both sides of the argument about Zionism.

Victoria Clark spent time with leading Christian Zionists and heard, with incredulity, what they say to their followers. They want war; they want the USA to "obliterate Syria" and they want Israel to "nuke Iran". They believe that these wars will hasten the desired day of the `rapture', the end-times when the tiny minority of true believers will be taken up to heaven and Christ will establish heaven on earth.
